What is social investment and what is the legal framework governing it? What future legal challenges will be necessary for social investment to develop within the charitable sector?

This session will be led by Neasa Coen and Tora Smith (Charity Law Group, Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP) and will include a consideration of topics such as what is permissible under current law, trustees’ duties in relation to investment, the regulatory framework for social investment and whether this is conducive to supporting social investment. The speakers will also discuss what future legal changes might further the development of social investment.

What do you do with your money? Should/Can a Foundation be more than an investment company that uses some of its excess cashflow (or the interest on its endowment) for charitable purposes? What are the implications of this? How much risk are grant-maker-turned-investor prepared to tolerate?

This panel will be chaired by David Carrington, Danielle Walker-Palmour (CEO of the Friends Provident Foundation), Robert Dufton (CEO of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation), Richard Maitland (Head of Charities, Sarasin & Partners LLP).

 What role does mainstream finance have to play in the development of the Big Society and the Big Society Bank?.

This panel will be chaired by Malcolm Hayday, CEO Charity Bank. Other panel members to be confirmed.

 What does the financial sector have to do better to grow social investment? What do the promoters of  social business need to do better in order to justify the ‘supply’ of capital to this sector? What infrastructure is in place to support both ends?

This panel will be chaired by Antony Ross, Executive Director Bridges Ventures . Panel members will include Caroline Mason, COO Charity Bank. Panel members will include Nick O’Donohoe (Global Head of Research, JP Morgan) and Caroline Mason (COO Charity Bank) and Rodney Swartz (CEO, Clearly So).

Update on Finance Act 2010 from the Charity Tax Group UK
 The Taxes (Definition of Charity) (Relevant Territories) Regulations 2010 , which come into force on 20 August 2010, specify Iceland and Norway as ‘relevant territories’ for the purposes of Schedule 6 to the Finance Act 2010 (the jurisdiction condition of the definition of “charity” in paragraph 1). The Regulations are accompanied by a helpful Explanatory Memorandum.

New Director at EAPG
It is with regret that the Association reports Richard Bendell's resignation on health grounds, recognising all the good work he has accomplished for us during his time as Director. We are however delighted to announce that Sue Daniels, who has been acting as Interim Director since February 2010, has agreed to become our Director going forward.
 
Coutts launch social enterprise advisory service
Friday 2nd July - Encouraging involvement in Social Enterprises has just taken a leap forward with the announcement that Coutts, private banking arm of RBS, will be launching an advisory service specifically aimed at helping its clients to become involved in social enterprises.
