A discussion of the critical role of unrestricted funding and core support in strategic philanthropy

Following the publication of the Institute for Philanthropy’s research, ‘Supportive to the Core: Why Unrestricted Funding Matters’, EAPG is pleased to present a roundtable focusing on the vital importance of unrestricted funding to effective philanthropy. With perspectives from grant-makers, donors and charities, this discussion will examine why so many donors and grant-makers are wary of offering core support and covering overheads, and provide case studies of how funders and operational charities have worked together effectively through the provision of core support.

  • Defining ‘core support’: Is core support a clearly defined and universally agreed concept, or does it mean different things to different funders? Why are many funders reluctant to provide unrestricted funding? How can this reluctance be overcome?
  • The false economy of ‘low admin costs’: Are ‘low admin costs’ really the sign of a good organisation? Why is this idea so predominant within the philanthropy sector? Are funding practices leading charities to divert costs and repackage projects in order to meet the needs of funders, at the cost of their own time and resources?
  • Best practice, current practice: Are current funding practices supporting or hampering the development of high performance, high impact non-profits? Are they prepared to cover the costs of measuring, evaluating, and reporting effectiveness?
  • The role of intermediaries and advisers: How can philanthropy intermediaries and wealth advisers help to develop the funder-charity relationship? How much need is there for donor education and advice to ensure donors have realistic expectations and an understanding of the needs of the organisations they support?
  • Case studies: Core Funding in Practice: A selection of case studies from the Institute for Philanthropy’s report, with perspectives from both charities and funders.

New Director at EAPG
It is with regret that the Association reports Richard Bendell's resignation on health grounds, recognising all the good work he has accomplished for us during his time as Director. We are however delighted to announce that Sue Daniels, who has been acting as Interim Director since February 2010, has agreed to become our Director going forward.
